Samuel 4 (Eliakim 3, Samuel, 2 Thomas 1), born in Sandwich, Feb. 20, 1740-1; remained in his native place long enough to perform a good part in the struggle for independence and then removed to Maine. Was in Waterville about 1784; soon after removed to Fairfield, near by; built the first framed house there; was a farmer; town clerk for twenty years; a justice of the local court. Though he had lost a leg he made his way well on a wooden one and accomplished a great deal. He died suddenly, — dropped down in the road. He married Mary, who was born in 1749.
Samuel Tobey of Sandwich was chosen 2d Lieutenant of the 1st Sandwich company (Capt. Simeon Fish) in the 1st Barnstable regiment, March 19, 1776; commissioned 1st Lieut. June 5, 1778; was one of the officers in Capt. Elisha Hedges' co. detached from his brigade by Brig. Joseph Otis and put under Maj. Winslow of Col. Doane's regiment, Barnstable, Jan. 7, 1777; was on the roll of Capt. Fish's co., Sept. 1778 ; service on alarm at Dartmouth and Falmouth.
