His mother died in 1847 and his father died in California, perhaps in the gold rush. He was l iving with his uncle Samuel and family in the 1850 census, probably as an orphan. The 1860 ce nsus shows him livng at age 15 with Charles Tobey and his wife Relief and their family in Fai rfield.
