Allen F. Bates Jr.'s history dates back to five generations of residence in the city of Elmhurst. He is a descendent of one of the founding families of Elmhurst. The Bates family, along with the Henry Glos family, were the original founders of the Elmhurst National Bank, which dates back to 1894. His parents, Alben F. Bates and Clara G. Bates (the former Clara Glos) at one time lived on the second floor of the building where the Elmhurst National Bank stood. ''Pete'' Bates was born on the site of Virginia Street, which is now known as the La Claire Apartments building. He attended Hawthorn Grade School and graduated from York High School in 1935, going on from there to Cornell University and graduating in the Class of 1939. At Cornell, Peter was an active member of crew team and his fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon. He entered Northwestern Law School in 1939 and enlisted in the Armed Services with the West Suburban Hospital Unit in 1942 and served until 1946. He became a Technical Sergeant in the Medical Corps serving for over three years in the 25th Evacuation Hospital and 4th Island Command on Espiritu Santo Island in the South Pacific. Upon admission to the Bar Association in 1946, he was appointed as an Assistant State's Attorney for DuPage County by Lee Daniels until 1949. In 1950 he joined the legal firm of Bates & Bates, Attorneys, in Elmhurst. In 1975 he succeeded his father as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Elmhurst National Bank after already serving many years as a board director. His many community activities include over 50 years of membership in Kiwanis Club, membership in the County State Bar Association, Chairman of the local chapter of the Salvation Army, institutional representative of the local Boy Scout Troop 72, past Charter Member of the Elmhurst Jaycees, Director of Elmhurst National Bank, member of the Board of the Elmhurst Bicentennial Commission, board member of the Elmhurst Historical Museum Foundation, elected member of Elmhurst Historial Commission and Honorary Board Member of Elmhurst Art Museum and member of the American Legion. Despite his busy life, he made time for several hobbies including boating, steam engines, a machine shop where he does woodwork, welding and machine tooling. He also was a member of the York Radio Club and what was most interesting to him, the study of astronomy. He had an endless quest for knowledge. He shared a lifelong joy of summers at Lake Geneva with his family, where he took pride in piloting his self-designed gentleman's tug boat. His family remembers him fondly as loving husband, father and grandfather. They recognize him as a generous benefactor to his community. He will be remembered for being a unique man of vision possessing a memorable sense of humor, which he was quick to share with all who met him.
