Carl F. Haenert, 86, of Galena, formerly of Scales Mound, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community.
Service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Burial will be in Township Cemetery, Scales Mound, where military rites will be accorded by the Galena Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Club. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
He was born on Sept. 29, 1926, in Mauston, Wis., son of Erich and Tosca (Kunze) Haenert. At the age of six, he returned to Germany, where he lived for 20 years.
While in Germany, he served in the German army from 1942 until 1946. Carl then returned to America in 1951 and settled in Scales Mound.
He married Jean Hesselbacher on June 11, 1953, in Scales Mound.
Carl was inducted into the United States Army in 1954 and served as a specialist second class until his honorable discharge in 1956.
He farmed in Scales Mound from 1956 until 1975 and then drove semi for Eustice, McMorhan and Glasgow Trucking Companies until his retirement in 1996.
Surviving are his wife, Jean; three daughters, Linda (Calvin) Schafer and Paula (friend, Mike Rogers) Haenert, both of Galena, and Carla (Dan) Medberry, of Bettendorf, Iowa; five granddaughters, Meghan (Matt) Randecker, Abigail Schafer and Olivia Schafer, Alexis Medberry and Bryana Medberry; a great-grandson, Wyatt Randecker; and a brother, Herman (Judy) Haenert, of Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Horst Haenert; and a sister in-law, Harriet Haenert.
