He was called a New Light because he separated from the Congregational Church in Berwick and became a Baptist. He was the first elder in the first Baptist church in Berwick which was the first of this denomination in Maine. He built the fourth part of the meeting house and gave it to the parish and also a parsonage. He was never ordained but preached most of the time to this church till his death.
