Obituary:
William “Bill” Emery Ullmann, Jr. was born February 22, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to W.E. Ullmann, Sr. and Catherine Hawley Ullmann and passed away peacefully at his home on September 27, 2015 in Pocomoke City, Maryland.

Bill spent his youth between Chicago, Lake Geneva, and Scales Mound, attending school at the Latin School in Chicago and Scales Mound, then went on to a semester at Dartmouth, and finishing his degree at the University of Arizona. After receiving his degree, he served a short time in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, stationed in Panama, helping “defend the canal” and began his love of flying, starting the path to earning his pilots license there.

After his honorable discharge, he decided to start a ranch south of Eagle Butte, SD. He had spent summers there during high school, working with the cowboys, meeting his life-long friends Albert Lopez and Geno Hunt, and fell in love with the people, the land, and the lifestyle. With him on the ranch was his first wife Karin, and joining them in 1959 was his first son, W.E. Ullmann III. After a time, the ranch headquarters were moved to McLaughlin, South Dakota, and their daughter Holly Elizabeth joined their family in 1966.

In 1979, Bill married Rita Schott, and accepted her children, Debbie, Dallas and Joyce as his own before their children, John Christopher and Angela Fay came along to complete the family shortly afterward. Bill was active in Stockgrowers as well as a member of the board of West River Telephone Cooperation, acting as president for many years. In 1982 Bill started on the path to building “Saguaro”, a 39-foot sailboat in the airplane hanger on the ranch. After completing his three-year project in a short nine years, Bill, Rita, John, and Angie began their adventure by putting the boat in the water in Red Wing Minnesota. Their travels took them on the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee Rivers, across the Gulf of Mexico, up the East Coast as far as Boston, and back south as far as Venezuela. Because the children needed to return for school periodically, there were times that Bill would travel single-handedly, including a trip from the Bahamas, through the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and completing the journey sailing from Venezuela back to Maryland.

When the blue-water adventures had ended for the family, Bill and Rita made their home in Pocomoke City, Maryland. Bill spent his time there tinkering with “Saguaro” and helping his new friends with their own boating projects.

Bill is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rita Ullmann, four daughters Holly (Steve) Lewis of Bloxom, VA, Angela Ullmann of St. Augustine, FL, Debbie McAdams of Columbia Falls, MT, and Joyce (Jim) Mulloy of Timber Lake, SD, and two sons Dallas Schott of McLaughlin, SD and John (Amy) Ullmann of Pierre, SD, a sister Carolyn “Kiki” Case of Scales Mound, IL fifteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, plus many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents Bill was preceded in death by his son, W.E. Ullmann III and his sister Harriet Haenert.

A Celebration of his life and a time of sharing memories will be held on Wednesday, September 30th at the Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City beginning at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Costen House Museum, P.O. Box 430, Pocomoke City, MD 21851.

Arrangements are in the care of the Holloway Funeral Home, P.A., 107 Vine Street, Pocomoke City, MD 21851. To send condolences please visit, www.hollowayfh.com.
