Ullmann, Karin (Stallcup)
Phoenix native Karin Stallcup Ullmann, born July 20, 1930 passed away peacefully on April 24, 2013 at the age of 82. Karin had a voracious appetite for reading and was truly interested in knowing and helping people. She liked politics and was active in her local and state Government at an early age. Her multifaceted life showcased her many talents as a writer, editor, researcher, educator, reporter, speaker, youth counselor, project manager, and even as a rancher's wife. Karin's enthusiasm for politics became apparent when she was just a junior in high school. At age 17 she was elected the first Girls State governor where she learned she could accomplish goals through political institutions. At an AZ governor's conference on juvenile delinquency she proposed that instead of building more recreation centers, youths and the state would be better served by helping youths find after-school and summer jobs. Karin's idea was approved and she became the first founder/director of Arizona's Youth Employment Service. During her college years she worked as an adoption examiner and youth counselor. Karin graduated from the University of AZ in 1953 with a degree in Social Work. In 1956 Karin was married to William E Ullmann, Jr. and moved to a cattle ranch in South Dakota. In addition to being a wife and mother she also was appointed to the South Dakota Republican Central Committee and the South Dakota State Advisory Board. In 1975 she divorced and returned to her native city. She became a prolific contributor to Phoenix's oral history archives. Her contributions included interviews and articles of many pioneer Phoenicians and cowboys of the C O Bar Livestock Company for the Phoenix History Project. In addition, as a member of the Southwest Oral History Association, she selected and interviewed speakers for the Arizona Historical Society. In 1987 she formed, wrote for, and edited the magazine, "Phoenix Yesterday and Today," which is no longer in publication.Karin especially loved to share her passion for words with her family and friends, who remember her fondly for the many books, articles, and handwritten letters that she sent to them. Karin is survived by her sister Ann Dhu Stallcup Goldberg (widow of Arizona statesman Chet Goldberg, Jr.); daughter Holly Lewis, her husband Steve, and their daughter Sarah; grandchildren Whitney Ullmann and William Emery Ullman IV; nephews Chet Goldberg III, Gary Goldberg and his wife Patti; Evan Stallcup and his wife Lynne Kasai; John Stallcup and his wife April; niece Gerin and her husband Jim Suehiro; and other cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by son William Emery Ullmann III and brother Evan S. Stallcup. Karin will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
